If you are looking for things to do in South Dakota’s state capital you will be blown away by the options. Pierre, South Dakota is the 2nd least populated state capital in the United States but what they lack in population numbers they make up for in adventure, unique eateries, and hospitality. This community sits along the bustling Missouri River and takes full advantage of all the opportunities that the water ways provide. You will find endless places to explore, discover, and dine during your trip but here’s a few highlights to start with!
Explore
Get on the water

Head to Fun Time Rentals in Fort Pierre and rent a kayak, paddle board, or even a boat for the day! With the Missouri river running right between Pierre and Fort Pierre many locals take full advantage of getting out on the water. There are multiple boat launch areas in the area as well as beaches in town and at state park areas.
State Capital Building

Tour South Dakota’s state capital building and learn some of the local history. It’s pretty easy to see upon arrival that the South Dakota state capital building is beautiful. However, the beauty continues and is amplified inside as well. I recommend blocking at least a couple hours of your day to tour this building. When you arrive there are self guided tour books with more information that help guide you through each floor of this immaculate building.
Oahe Dam

Head out to the Oahe Dam and see the 4th largest reservoir in the United States! Tours are available one time a day Tuesday – Saturday at 1pm but call ahead to make sure there aren’t any cancellations. Be sure to make your way over to the visitors center as well. There is plenty to discover in the visitors center area and some incredible views!
LaFramboise State Nature Area

Spend some time with nature at the LaFramboise State Nature Area. This nature area is on an island and showcases beautiful views of both the Pierre and Fort Pierre sides of the Missouri River. Have a picnic or get a good hike in around the island. There is even a fishing pier if you want to cast your line for the day!
Eat
Crabby Shell’s Seafood Shack

Chill out on the patio at this waterfront restaurant in Pierre. Crabby Shell’s Seafood Shack is located right along the water and has a large patio and even a roof top for you to sit. Head up to the window to order and they’ll alert you when your order is ready. Take your food to go or get cozy, soak up the sun, and play some yard games out front even!
Pierre Donut Shop

If you’re looking for a sweet way to start your day then head on over to the Pierre Donut Shop. This locally owned donut shop is a local favorite and is known for their raised donuts. When you walk in you can see the space where they are making them fresh all morning. Options go fast so be sure to get there early for the best selection!
La Minestra

Enjoy an upscale meal experience at La Minestra. This Italian restaurant is family owned and operated and provides some incredible authentic food to the area. They have daily specials available and a seasonal menu so check them out online in case you are looking for something specific.
Zesto

Grab a sweet treat at one of the hottest spots in town! Zesto is a local ice cream shop with unique rotating flavors that are made in house. While the line may look long, service is fast and the ice cream sundaes are totally worth it! Be sure to check out their Facebook page for rotating menus and special sundae options they may have before you go.
Stay
Clubhouse Hotel & Suites

Relax and unwind with a night(or two!) at the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites. The Clubhouse Hotel & Suites has the most comfortable mattresses I have ever slept on in a hotel so they are perfect to get some rest after a long day. The hot continental breakfast provides you with fresh eggs, biscuits and gravy, and more. The pool area of the hotel is also something not to be missed. There is a small water park area and even a spacious hot tub for an extra level of relaxation at the end of the day.
