In Southwestern Minnesota, you’ll find a small town of just under 14,000 giving some big city vibes. With small-town cafes to unique dining options all throughout town as well as museums, entertainment venues, and more there is always something to do and explore! Marshall, Minnesota is the perfect weekend getaway and offers a variety of indoor and outdoor options as well as big annual events so no matter what season you plan to visit you are sure to have a blast.

Camden State Park

This state park is just a short drive from Marshall, Minnesota, and offers a great opportunity to get outdoors and explore nature. Camden State Park offers over 15 miles of hiking trails, over 4 miles of mountain biking paths, and 10 miles of horse trails. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in the area, tent and RV parking spaces are available as well as a lodge that accommodates up to eight people. This is a great place to go trout fishing or enjoy an afternoon on the sandy beach of their spring-fed swimming pond.

AJ’s Family Arcade

Opened in 2012, this locally owned fun center is great for all ages. You can easily bring family or friends and spend the entire day here. With a variety of arcade games, 18-hole mini golf, go-carts, sand volleyball, and more there is entertainment for all ages. AJ’s is a hot spot for summer fun with the availability to host birthday parties and make this a memorable experience for all.

The Gym Sports Bar and Grill

Indulge in the guilty pleasure foods at The Gym. This sports bar and grill is connected to AJ’s Family Arcade making this a convenient option for a bite to eat before or after a full day of play. They offer a huge menu with something for everyone from classic burgers to more unique and fun dishes such as loaded waffle fries and even a peanut butter burger topped with peanut butter, double bacon, and fresh strawberries. If you are feeling adventurous be sure to add a side of their sweet heat jam to any burger to bring another layer of incredible flavors out. 

Nessa’s Naturals

Pamper yourself at Nessa’s Naturals. This boutique focuses on all-natural skincare products as well as luxurious loungewear. The owner has been crafting mineral-based makeup since 2010 and offers her entire line available in-store. They also carry cozy pajamas, robes, and other loungewear so you can truly treat yourself with a shopping spree here.

Wings Axe Co

Enjoy a rainy day indoors at Wings Axe Co. This upscale axe-throwing venue features nine throwing lanes, food, and a full bar to make this a fun stop to get together with friends. This is one of the only axe-throwing facilities in the region where you will find electronic games and scoring systems available, taking out some of the work of tracking everything yourself by hand.

Walnut Grove Mercantile

This family-owned business has been creating honey products and gourmet foods since 1992. They were awarded Business of the Year in 2019 and offer a nostalgic atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else in southwestern Minnesota. Their homemade products include barbecue sauce, soaps, honey, and preserves but the main star here is their fudge. They offer a dozen incredible fudge options every day with one of them changing out each month. The fudge has been so successful with online sales and fundraisers that they typically make over 40 tons of fudge every single year. 

History Walking Tour

Explore the beauty of downtown Marshall with a Historic Walking Tour. Originally developed by the Lyon County Historical Society, this walking tour includes four stops downtown with historical kiosks featuring vintage photos and information on the rich history of the community. While you’re downtown, take in some of the public art that is featured throughout the Marshall community making this a beautiful small town to explore.

Tavern 507

There’s no place better to grab a bite to eat at the end of the day than at Tavern 507. This restaurant features a large patio for the warm summer nights as well as multiple fireplaces to keep you warm during the winter. Their made-from-scratch menu focuses on simple ingredients done right with a big focus on wings and creative entrees. Be sure to check out the Chicken & Waffles with two sweet Belgium waffles, crispy juicy chicken, and a side of jalapeno-infused maple syrup.

Greenwood Nursery

Greenwood Nursery is a massive nursery featuring many different types of plants, flowers, and trees for those with a green thumb. Originally started in Tracy, Minnesota in 1981, owner Jeff Farber expanded to Marshall, Minnesota just five years later. This nursery grows most of its own plants in its over 50,000 square feet of greenhouse space meaning you’re getting great quality local products every time you purchase something here. Outside of the greenery, they offer a great shop full of pots, garden decorations, and more.

Main Stay Cafe

Start your day with the best breakfast and coffee in town at Main Stay Cafe. This cafe offers everything from caramel apple parfaits to fresh egg bakes made daily as well as avocado toast options that you’ll be craving when you return home. Grab a cup of coffee and a good book and stay awhile or make this a meet-up spot with friends each day you’re in town.

Lyon County Museum 

Located in downtown Marshall you’ll find the Lyon County Museum which features three floors of permanent and temporary exhibits. The 2nd floor features an exhibit on “Making Lyon County Home”, an immersive exhibit showing the history of the area from 1945 to today. During the holiday season, you will also see a Christmas Tree Walk fundraiser exhibit that raises money for the Lyon County Museum. No trip the the museum is complete without a stop at the Schwan Ice Cream Parlor so plan to grab a sweet treat at the end of your visit.

Orphanage Antiques-Strawberry

Shop your heart out at Orphanage Antiques-Strawberry. While the main floor is mostly gift items and knick-knacks, the true gem of this store lies in the basement. Old squeaky stairs and low ceilings bring you down to every antiquer’s dream, an entire massive basement with every corner filled with antiques. If you’re a big antiquer plan a few hours here at least so you can really go through every corner and cranny where things can be found.

Brau Brothers Brewing Company

Brau Brothers has been putting the craft into craft brewing since 2006 when they first opened outside of Lucan, Minnesota. In 2013 they moved their operations to Marshall, Minnesota where they added a taproom to the brewery and ramped up their distribution system with the extra space they had. They now offer year-round and seasonal beer options as well as craft sodas including huckleberry and bubble gum flavors. Each year they host an event called Hopfest features great brews and even better music in the area as well.

Bagels & Brew

Grab a casual lunch at Bagels & Brew. This local cafe offers great coffee and even better lunch options. While they have a variety of sandwiches and wraps to choose from, their true shining star is their grilled paninis which are packed with flavor. Many sides are homemade as well so be sure to grab a container of their in-house pasta salad to accompany your dish.

Attend an Annual Event

Marshall, Minnesota hosts many annual events throughout the year that you won’t want to miss!

Check out their Craft Beer & Wine Festival on May 19th with unlimited samples of beer and wine, a commemorative glass you can take home, and access to games and food vendors.

Prairie Jam takes place every September and brings in some great country music artists to the region. Check out Lauren Alaina this year on September 19th.
